The Best Custom Cat & Dog ID Tags of 2024

We think of our pets as members of our family, but unlike our human relatives, our beloved dogs and cats can’t ask for directions home. If your dog loses his way home after straying from the yard, an ID tag on his collar could help bring him home safely. With your address and phone number displayed prominently on the tag, a neighbor will know exactly who to call or where to bring the lost animal.

You should get an ID tag as soon as you adopt a pet and every time your contact information changes. Readability and durable quality are important factors when shopping for a tag, but let’s not forget about style! Below we have compiled the best cat & dog tags that are both functional and fashionable.

  • Durable
  • Customizable

  • Great look
  • Different forms

  • None, unless you don't like it 🙂

All of these tags have special features that we like but we choose the GoTags stainless steel ID tags as our winner. Although I like the look of the colorful aluminum tags, I would much rather buy a stainless steel tag that I know is going to last. This tag is just as stylish as the others with its polished mirror finish, and I like that GoTags offers nine different interesting shapes to choose from.

Another point for me is the two-sided engraving that this tag offers. Sometimes one side of engraving just isn’t enough, so I like that I can put a pet’s name on one side and an address and phone number on the other side. After all, you’ll want to make sure that if your pet is lost, all of the information needed to alert you about it is present and readable.

Pet ID Tag Shopping Tips

Microchips or even GPS tracking may be the norm for pets these days, but modern technology doesn’t overrule the importance of a pet ID tag. Your dog or cat might only stray down the block, but if you don’t have contact information attached to their collar, they could be picked up and mistaken for a stray. A clearly engraved pet ID tag is so vital in those first few moments because it lets the people who find your pet know that it has a home.

Choose a Durable ID Tag

Because dog and cat IDs are so important for your pet’s security, it’s crucial that you choose an ID tag made of durable materials that won’t get damaged. Lost dogs and cats can take some adventures, and you’ll want to ensure that their tags are still firmly attached and readable even after a Milo and Otis-style odyssey.

Pay Attention to the Metal

Most dog and cat IDs are made of either aluminum or stainless steel. I recommend going with the latter because it just lasts so much longer than aluminum. In fact, stainless steel is almost twice as strong as aluminum and four times as dense. You’ll find that stainless steel tags are just a little bit costlier, but the benefit is you’ll only have to replace them when your address or phone number changes.

Make Sure the Tag is Engraved, Not Etched

When you have your ID tag engraved, make sure that it is an actual deep engraving and not just an etching. Some dog and cat ID tags are marketed as engraved when they are actually etched. The text on a poorer quality etched tag will slowly but surely wear away over time while a truly engraved ID tag will still be readable for years to come.

Pay Attention to the Attachment

If your pet gets lost, you don’t want their ID tag getting lost too. Though it’s tiny, the split ring that is used to attach an ID tag to the pet’s collar is a crucial part of their security. Cheaply made ID tags might come with a similarly low quality split ring that allows the tag to easily fall off the collar. Try to choose a tag with a durable split ring, or if you realize you have a flimsy split ring, replace it with a stronger one.

Engraving On Both Sides Is Better

Dog and cat ID tags either come with one or two-sided engraving, and I definitely recommend getting engraving on both sides. There are usually just four lines per side, which is hardly enough room to write your pet’s name, address and phone number. That’s why most people choose to engrave their pet’s name big and bold on one side and then keep the contact information on the other side.

Order Extra Tags

If you have other information to communicate, such as your cat or dog’s medical condition, you can always have extra tags engraved. It may be a good idea to write things like, “If I’m alone, I’m lost” on an extra tag so that when people find your pet, they won’t hesitate to call you.

Not Too Small, Not Too Big

Dog and cat ID tags come in a range of sizes, so you’ll want to make sure you order a size that’s appropriate for your pet. For example, a Chihuahua is not going to be comfortable wearing an ID tag that is fit for a St. Bernard. When you order your ID tags, check the specific measurements rather than just going with “small” or “large.” Some ID tags will indicate specific breeds that they fit best.

Decide Whether You Want a Silencer

There are benefits and drawbacks to fitting your pet’s ID tag with a silencer. On the one hand, silencers make walks more peaceful without all of the jingling and jangling of metals. On the other hand, the noise of the tags can help you to keep track of your dog when they run off. Many silencers are glow-in-the-dark, which is an added benefit if you take a lot of nighttime walks with your pet.

Choose a Tag With Style

Last but not least, choose an ID tag worthy of the loving, loyal companion that you choose to share your home with. With so many customizable options, you can really outfit your pet with a design to match its unique personality. After all, a pet ID tag is probably the only jewelry that your pet is going to wear. Make it flashy or classy, it’s up to you.
