All cats love a tasty treat. Treats are great when used for an afternoon snack or as a reward for good behavior.
But what goes into a good treat? Should they be soft or crunchy? Does the treat do anything for the cat, or is it just empty calories? Will my cat actually like them?

These treats are a delicious blend of the best. They are a pocket-shaped treat that’s crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, giving your cat variety in every bite. The crunchy exterior helps control tartar as your cats munch their way into the good squishy stuff inside.
This gigantic bucket of treats is an excellent value if you have multiple cats all clamoring for treats at once. The 30-ounce resealable jar comes in chicken, salmon, seafood, and tuna flavors. Temptations Classics also have other flavors in smaller sizes, like beef and even catnip.
Coming in at under two calories per treat, you can feel good about giving your cat a big snack without overloading them between meals. One thing to note about Temptations’ ingredients, however—they rely pretty heavily on grains like corn, wheat, and rice if that’s a concern for you.
Takeaways
- Crunch and soft combined
- Value size for multi-cat households
- Low-calorie snack
Irresistibles treats come in two flavor varieties, made with real white meat chicken or salmon. There are no artificial flavors added, so all the flavor is coming from the meat. These treats use pea protein and wheat flour as a thickening agent. Pea protein is an excellent alternative to other binding ingredients like corn and soy.
Meow Mix sources all its ingredients for Irresistibles from U.S. and Canadian sources, and they are produced in their Kansas manufacturing facility. If North American-sourced ingredients are important to you, look no further than Irresistibles.
They come in a mega-sized 17-ounce resealable bottle, helping to keep the treats fresh. Just don’t forget to close it tightly! Those little noses can smell these treats a mile away.
Takeaways
- No artificial flavors
- Pea protein as a thickener
- North American-sourced ingredients
Bring the party to your cats! Party Mix treats come in mostly fishy flavors with salmon, whitefish, tuna, and crab mixed up in different varieties. I love the cute flavor names—Beachside Crunch, Kahuna Crunch, and Treasure Crunch. Fun!
The value sizes are 20-ounce and 30-ounce resealable containers for all your feline friends. These crunchy treats are less likely to dry out than softer treats, which is nice. And you can call your cats for snack time just by rattling the jar. They’ll come.
Another great thing about the crunchy style of Party Mix—they’re great for using in treat toys. Cats are hunters at heart and love to play with toys that rattle and reward them with a light snack.
Takeaways
- Fun, fishy flavors
- Great for treat toys
Feline Greenies are the number one recommended dental treat by veterinarians. That’s no surprise when you look at what they’ve got going for them. They are proven to help with reducing tartar and cleaning teeth in general. Their unique shape is designed to get into the higher contours of your cat’s canines, helping with tartar up near the gumline. They also claim to freshen your cat’s breath—an impressive feat, indeed.
Greenies are fortified with added vitamins and minerals, including taurine, to help maintain nutritional balance at snack time. They come in chicken, salmon, tuna, and catnip flavors.
The ingredients are heavy on grains, but for a crunchy treat, that’s no surprise. They also have added coloring, but it’s from fruit juice and turmeric, so it’s a natural additive.
Takeaways
- #1 vet-recommended dental treat
- Help clean teeth and reduce tartar
- Freshen breath
BLUE is a brand that’s well known for its meat-heavy, grain-free foods, and their treats are no exception. These treats are the first we’ve seen with a turkey flavor—and cats dig turkey. They also have other flavor combo options available like chicken and salmon or chicken and duck.
These soft treats are hearty and meaty, which is unsurprising given that the first two ingredients are deboned chicken and turkey. BLUE doesn’t use animal by-products in their formulas. Their ingredients are simple and wholesome, using potatoes, vegetable glycerin, and gelatin as bonding agents, rather than gluten from grains.
Such simple ingredients make these treats great for any cat, but particularly those who suffer from allergies. Allergies and intolerances to grains and gluten are pretty common for our meat-eating friends.
Takeaways
- Simple grain-free ingredients
- Turkey and duck flavors
- Great for specific food allergies
Another grain-free option for feline snacking is Wellness Kittles. Kittles is a crunchy treat that includes cranberries and blueberries in their formula. These two superfruits contain high levels of antioxidants, helping reduce free radicals in the body, which can contribute to cancer.
Cranberries are also excellent for supporting urinary health, making them a great additive to a treat. Kittles also have green tea as an ingredient, which is pretty rare. Because of its diuretic properties (i.e., makes your cat need to urinate more), green tea can also help with urinary health by flushing out the body more frequently.
Kittles is grain free, using potatoes and chickpeas as their primary binding agent. They also do not have artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives added.
Along with the cranberry, their combos include chicken, duck, salmon, tuna, whitefish, and turkey. They also have a holiday pack of turkey and cranberries, a favorite combo for people, too! Makes a great stocking stuffer for your cat.
Takeaways
- Cranberries and green tea for urinary support
- Grain free
- No meat by-products or fillers
For a different style of dental treat option, check out Purina’s DentaLife. These uniquely porous crunchy treats allow your cat to mow down with relative ease while not skimping on the dental cleaning. They come in chicken and salmon flavors, available in a 13.5-ounce container or 10 smaller packages that are 1.8 ounces each.
The treats are round and larger in size than many dental treats, requiring your cat’s teeth to do some extra work to snack. They reach up to the gumline better than smaller, flatter treats to help keep gums healthy. They’re scientifically designed to reduce tartar and freshen breath and contain added calcium and taurine as a supplement to your cat’s regular feeding routine.
These treats are recommended for cats larger than five pounds, probably because of the size of the treat. They are more challenging to chew on purpose to get to those hard-to-reach places but may be way too big for some cats’ mouths.
Purina does use grains and meat by-products in their pet supplies across the board, and these treats are pretty heavy with them.
Takeaways
- Unique porous texture helps clean more tartar
- Added calcium and taurine
Pet Greens creates a unique treat with their Cat Craves. They specialize in getting your cat the greens they need for a healthy digestive tract. Most cat owners have seen their cats eating grass outside or provide indoor-only cats a source of green plants. Cat Craves is the only treat made with organic wheatgrass powder, providing the fiber that many cats lack without them having to snack on the grass itself.
Getting fiber from eating grass can help cats digest their food and hairballs. Owners may also note that their cat will often throw up the grass, which is actually not that bad (for the cat), as long as it is not happening too frequently. Treats with added greens is simply a boon for such long-suffering owners.
These treats are somewhere between hard and soft in texture, which is good for dental hygiene, too. They come in chicken, salmon, tuna, or turkey and duck flavor, and do not contain any wheat, corn, soy, or animal by-products.
Takeaways
- Made with organic wheatgrass
- Adds fiber to your cat’s diet
- No fillers or by-products
Delectables takes a new twist on cat treats with its lickable line. Lickable treats are more like wet cat food in texture. They combine small meaty chunks with sauces and veggies blended into a saucy style “so delicious your cat will lick the bowl clean.”
Cats love a variety of textures, and Delectables doesn’t disappoint with its stew, chowder, bisque, and a more smooth soft paté. It comes in a bunch of different flavors, like chicken, tuna, shrimp, and whitefish, some with just the meats and some with veggies added.
Delectables also caters to kittens and the elderly, with unique formulas designed to suit their various nutritional needs. The kitten variety has all the vitamins and minerals needed for a growing cat. The 15+ senior style has added potassium and cat probiotics for healthy digestion and kidney function.
Takeaways
- Saucy wet treats for a lickable snack
- Veggies, vitamins, and minerals added
- Variety of styles for all life stages
Temptations is back with its hairball control variety. As with the classic Temptations, these treats have a crunchy outside and soft inside. They are formulated to aid in hairball control and digestion, perfect for medium- or long-haired cats (and shorthairs get hairballs, too!).
These treats work best when combined with a diet that is already designed to help with hairball control. They are recommended for cats over 6 months, so wait on these if you have a kitten. Most kittens don’t have much trouble with hairballs at that age, anyway.
It’s important to note that while reading the ingredients, I didn’t see anything I recognized that helps control hairballs. Upon further research, I found that some owners state the hairball formula has changed and no longer contains petrolatum, a common ingredient for hairball control. Petrolatum is basically petroleum jelly, under fire as a hairball helper due to its artificial nature. Petrolatum has been known to help with hairballs, but it doesn’t help much if the treats no longer contain them.
Takeaways
- Crunchy and soft combo
- Helps with hairball control
